Anserine is a methylated dipeptide (β-alanyl-N-methylhistamine) derived from carnosine that acts as an intracellular buffer and antioxidant in muscle tissue. It accumulates in skeletal muscle where it neutralizes hydrogen ions produced during high-intensity exercise, reducing lactate-induced fatigue, and scavenges reactive oxygen species (ROS) to protect muscle cells from oxidative damage during and after exercise.
